Have you ever thought of traveling the world long-term? For this edition of our “Love of Travel” series, we caught up with Jeremy and Angie of Living the Dream Travel Blog (http://www.livingthedreamrtw.com). They are currently on their second around the world trip, and just returned from climbing to Mt. Everest Basecamp. They’ve also written a book to share their long-term travel planning tips, so be sure to check it out: “The Long-Term Traveler’s Guide.”
You guys have a lot of great information about traveling long term on your blog. What made you want to travel full time?
I think our desire to travel for longer periods of time came from the fact that we never got to travel much while living at home. 2 weeks of vacation from a job can be used for very little, and there are only so many life events where you may be able to take off for longer (such as summers during college or retirement, if we make it that far).
We often like to say that a long-term trip of a year is like 26 years worth of vacations if you stayed at home and worked. But the best part is that you don’t have to wait 26 years experience it all!
How did the two of you meet and what was your first trip together?
Angie and I went to school together where we were studying to be engineers. We didn’t start dating until after we graduated and she had moved to another city to start graduate school. Of course, I lived about 4 hours away, making for an incredibly long drive once a month. Funny how it always happens like that.
Our first trip together was a weekend in Philadelphia for 4th of July shortly after we started dating, but our first full vacation was a week-long cruise in the Caribbean after we had been dating for a year. The funny part about that trip was that since we were flying from different cities we had to meet-up in the Atlanta airport before flying down to the islands.
I have to say that was a first, and so far also the only time I’ve had to do that on a trip.
Was there a “special gem” that you found, a place that surprised you?
I knew I would love Switzerland from the beginning, as the mountains always look stunning in every photo you see. My favorite gem is a tiny village called Lauterbrunnen up in the mountains that has easy access to tons of peaks, waterfalls right out your window, and is one of those places you don’t think should exist, but does.
After having been twice, I am still eager to go back and see it again because I still have yet to do it all.
PoP: Liz agrees with you about Lauterbrunnen! She has been there twice as well, and could keep visiting over and over – it’s incredible.
You have written a lot about food you have tried along the road during your travels. What stands out as your favorite: appetizers, dinner, or dessert and why?
What a hard question! Dinners are by far the best, but I don’t judge as long as the food is good. As for particular types, I could say that Thai Curry, Japanese Okonomiyaki, or Greek Gyros are my favorite, but that would be a bit boring. I think any food that was unexpected always stands out as a highlight.
The most exciting we’ve discovered so far are Slovenian Struckli, Bulgarian Shopska Salad, and Vietnamese Soups, to name a few. As for desert, nothing beats a Japanese mochi.
What is the one piece of advice would share with our readers about traveling long term?
Planning for it can be difficult at times, but once you get on the road all the minor issues and concerns you have will fade away. The hardest part is deciding to go, and once you commit yourself to it the rest comes easy.

Yes…oh how I want a Shopska Salad. Did not spend one day in Bulgaria where I didn’t eat one.
Thanks for the comment Corinne! A shopska salad huh? When we make it to Bulgaria we will definitely need to try one!
