Liz and I love hearing about unique travel destinations that not everyone knows about. So we are always excited to read about the “Don’t Skip” destinations around the world from our friends, Donny & Tamara of Turtles Travel. These veterans of the road have traveled to some wonderful places around the world, especially those that are off the main tourist path. We asked them to share their Top 5 Don’t Skip Destinations thus far.
Meet Donny & Tamara from Turtles Travel Blog
Through the “Don’t Skip” series, we aim to highlight places that aren’t necessarily the first place you think of when planning an itinerary. Places you stumble upon when plans change may be as rewarding, if not more so, than what originally made the “A-list.” That’s certainly the case for us. The series allows us to revisit places that don’t often get all the attention they deserve. Nevertheless, they are unique spots that hold a special place in our hearts. We hope you enjoy exploring them with us!
1. Bundi, India
While the region of Rajasthan is a perennial favorite among travelers to India, this well-worn route still holds some lesser-known treasures. Laid-back Bundi is rich in history, has an amazing temple and fort, and is a great jumping-off point for further exploration of the area.
2. Cahuita, Costa Rica
Tourists flock to the west coast of Costa Rica for beaches and the National Parks, but unassuming Cahuita on the east coast has Caribbean culture and charm to accompany its own diverse wildlife and pristine rainforests. If you’re looking to get away from it all, this might be the place to start.
3. St. Kitts
Little St. Kitts is big on personality. This island in the eastern Caribbean has it all: white and black-sand beaches, rainforest, lava formations, history, delicious food and good music. It’s small enough to drive around the perimeter in a day, but big enough to keep busy if that’s the goal.
4. Yogyakarta, Indonesia
A vibrant, colorful city filled with something for everyone, Yogyakarta lured us in and kept us much longer than we’d intended. Here, our palates were truly educated on Indonesian culinary delights as we ambled through this historic city. Nearby archaeological sites Borobudur and Prambanan will leave you awestruck.
5. Gyeongju, South Korea
Wander among the mysterious tumuli (grass-covered tombs) of Gyeongju and discover a truly beautiful place. This is a real break from the hustle and bustle of South Korea’s big cities. The surrounding area is wonderful for hiking, and there are endless temples and other religious and historical sites to explore.
