Tell us a little bit about yourselves and when travel became such a big part of your lives?
I’ve been obsessed with travel for as long as I can remember. When I was a kid, I already knew travel would be a huge part of my life and luckily my family went on overseas trips often. Scott has explored much more of the United States than I have. He took camping trips with his family when he was a kid and has made several cross country trips on his own. Ever since we met in 2006, we’ve been traveling all over the world together, while keeping our roots in San Diego.
What’s your most important travel tip that you think often gets overlooked? Why is it important?
I always tell people to expect things to go wrong. Travel can be frustrating sometimes, especially if you are on a tight schedule, so plan for the unexpected and try to make the best of those situations.
We noticed you two have an awesome surfing section! What is your favorite surf spot and why?
Mine is our home break in (San Diego, CA) because it’s familiar and we can surf with all of our friends. I know I would love Chicama though — Scott’s favorite break and one of the longest lefts in the world — if I ever make it there! Watch San Diego Summer Surf Video
You have some wonderful photos on your website. This may be a tough question, but what has been your most favorite destination that you have photographed so far on your travels?
Any tropical island (Aruba is a new favorite). Or any beach scene http://ordinarytraveler.com/articles/southeast-alaska-photos, for that matter. I’m obsessed with photographing beaches. Although, I did come home from Nepal with some really great portraits, so that country could possibly be my favorite place to photograph — even without a beach.
What country surprised you by exceeding your expectations, and why?
Well, I just went to Canada (North Vancouver Island) for the first time and now I’m obsessed with the beauty of this country. One of my faults is not exploring places closer to home. I hope to remedy that soon and we have a few more Canadian destinations on the agenda for 2014/2015.
Your travel resume is impressive! Is there a place that you haven’t been to and are looking forward to visiting?
So many. My goal is to visit every tropical island in the world, so I really have my work cut out for me. Neither of us have spent much time in South America and it’s very high on our list as well. Flights have gotten insanely expensive from San Diego to any destination in South America, so we’re always on the lookout for cheap flights.
In June, we’re headed to the island of Mauritius for Scott’s birthday and I can barely contain my excitement!
