This week we are continuing with our “Love of Travel” series by getting to know Mike and Luci, a traveling couple who have a unique perspective on traveling with your partner.  Being a traveling couple ourselves, we enjoy hearing from other couples and what they have learned over the years.  So besides having an awesome travel blog, Mike & Luci have a lot of valuable couples travel tips!  Be sure to check out their website www.1000fights.com (yes, you read it right).

The “Fighting Couple” – Mike & Luci

Your name cracks us up, and causes us to do a double-take!  How did you come up with it?  Did you argue much about the name decision?

First off, we are Mike and Luci of 1000 Places to Fight Before you Die.  We are affectionately called the “Fighting Couple”.  We have been traveling together since our honeymoon which was 17 years ago!  Wow how time flies!  Each year we take one big trip together.  We take turns picking where we go.  We started our blog two years ago after friends wanted to see some of the pictures and hear some of our travel “fights”. We never expected that it would take off like it has.

Our mission is to encourage couples to get out and travel together.  It is so important to keep relationships strong.  One of the best ways we have found is finding time to travel together.  You learn so much about your partner as you explore together.  It doesn’t have to be some extravagant trip abroad.  It can be something as simple as going on a weekend trip.  It gives you time to talk, reconnect and dream.  The second thing that we hope to pass on is that it is ok to fight.  As long as you fight fair.  All couples have challenges.  We encourage couples to work through their differences.

What has been your favorite place you’ve visited and why?

I love this question, but it is so difficult.  Its like asking which is your favorite child….  We have so many favorite locations.  But if we were to pick one, we would pick Turkey.  We spent time in Istanbul and then we traveled in central Turkey visiting a number of historical sites.  Turkey is one of those great under discovered places.  The people there are extremely hospitable.   We loved exploring Roman ruins up close.  Turkish food is amazing!  If you are looking for a place a little off the beaten path, we highly, highly recommend Turkey.

Have you ever traveled somewhere that completely surprised you (good or bad).  Where was it and what was surprising about it?

The worst experience we had was in Nice, France.  We had driven back from Italy and it was very late.  We were both exhausted as it was the tail end of the trip.  We were hungry, tired and lost.  Not a good combination for the “fighting couple.”  We had the address of the hotel, we were on the right street, but we just couldn’t find the number.  It was a one way street and we kept driving in circles as there was no parking and it was a one way street.  After an hour of searching, we finally found our destination.  Trust us, there was some couple talk going on.

What is your number 1 tip for couples who travel together?

Our only tip would be:  GO!  It is so important that couples get out and see the world together.  Traveling as a couple can strengthen your relationship, help you relate to each other better and build your communication skills.  Each time me discover a new location, it is something that we accomplish together, and never forget.

Where is your next travel destination & what are you looking forward to most while visiting?

We are headed on an epic road trip in October that starts in Amsterdam, takes a short jaunt through Belgium.  Luci must have her Belgian chocolate!  We then take in much of western Germany.  The highlight that Mike is looking most forward to is a super-car tour with our friends at RSR Nurburg!   Mike and his Ferrari!  Luci can’t wait to stay the night at a romantic castle hotel along the Rhine River.  Then we loop back up and visit Denmark for the first time.  Should be a great trip of fun and fighting!

A very special thanks to Mike and Luci from 1000 Places to Fight Before You Die (www.1000Fights.com). It’s so helpful to get tips and insights from other couples who travel together.  We completely agree that traveling as a couple can really strengthen a relationship and teach you how to work together (especially when things don’t go as planned).  In fact, travel may be the best way to really get to know a person, because you are taken out of your comfort zone.  Plus, it’s also a great way to make memories together.

Happy Travels Everyone!
