When we travel we tend to be very busy, seeing and doing as much as possible. So we can get pretty exhausted! It’s nice to have some rest and relaxation here and there to help rejuvenate our bodies and minds. During our recent stay at the Sheraton Kona at Keauhou Bay on the big island of Hawaii, it was easy to find a way to spoil ourselves with a Hawaii spa experience that we will never forget!
It was only a short walk from our comfortable room to the world class Ho’ola Spa, located on the Sheraton grounds and overlooking the bay. “Ho’ola” in Hawaiian means “to heal” or “make well,” and that is exactly what we needed after traveling for so long and with all the hiking and snorkeling that we had done. So we scheduled some time at the spa in the early afternoon and looked forward to relaxing for the rest of the day!
Melt Your Cares Away at the Ho’ola Spa in Hawaii
As we walked through the beautiful lobby of the Sheraton to our spa appointment at Ho’ola Spa, we already started the relaxation process. When we opened the glass door to the spa we were welcomed with a warm “Aloha, we have been expecting you Mr. and Mrs. Wilson. Right this way.” Just hearing these words put me in relaxation mode, and my cares seemed to melt away immediately. We were escorted first to our locker rooms and given a hawaiian sarong to put on, instead of robes, and slippers.
We booked a popular package, the “Unforgettable Massage for Two” and added a visit to the steam rom and Himalayan salt room. This is a great package so that you can experience the full benefits of the Ho’ola Spa. One of the coolest things that I was looking forward to here at the Ho’ola Spa was having our treatments outside. Yes, you can have outdoor massages while listening to the natural sounds of the Pacific Ocean as the waves crash on the black lava rock.
Start Off With a Whirlpool Soak Overlooking the Ocean
Our first treatment was a 25 minute whirlpool soak in the outdoor terrace overlooking the ocean and Rays on the Bay. This very private terrace makes for the perfect way to start off a treatment. The warmth of the whirlpool loosens the muscles and kicks your relaxation into full effect. We sat back enjoying the jets and gazed out at the water. With no obstructions to block our view, this was a perfect peaceful setting to begin our visit at the spa.
After our soak, we walked over to the massage tables, also located on the same private patio. Our professional masseuses guided us onto the tables ad explained the process of the Hawaiian Lomi Lomi massage. It was a soft swedish massage that felt perfectly soothing and very relaxing. Who needs music when you have the natural sounds of waves crashing against the lava rock and birds singing in the nearby trees. The slight cool breeze off the ocean also helped make for an amazingly tranquil atmosphere. Not only was the massage incredible, but they topped it off with a sea salt scrub of the feet!
Moving on to the Eucalyptus Steam Room
After that experience, we were so relaxed that we felt like we were walking on clouds as we were escorted from the outdoor patio to their private steam room. This eucalyptus steam room was a nice touch after the massages. We could breathe in the tropical aromas of the oils used for the massage, and that mixed with the calming eucalyptus steam was heaven for our senses. As an added bonus to this steam room, that I hadn’t seen before in my years of enjoying spas. They had a cold shower head that you could periodically turn! This is not only refreshing and cooling, but it helps to rinse the toxins off of your body that is being released by the hot steam that opens your pores! The steam room is a great add-on to your package at the Ho’ola Spa, and highly recommended.

Next Stop, a Unique Himalayan Salt Room
Our next stop was one that I was really looking forward to because I had never heard of it before! The Himalayan Salt Room is a new and unique treatment at the Ho’ola Spa at the Sheraton Kona Resort & Spa at Keauhou Bay. Having visited many spas around the world, and this was a first for us. In fact, this is one of only two salt rooms on the Hawaiian islands!
The salt here at the Ho’ola spa actually comes from the Himalayas. The purpose for the Salt Room is that large amounts of this salt in an environment creates bacteria-free air that is therapeutic for those breathing it in. It is believed that breathing in the super fine particles of salt cleanses the lungs of bacteria, irritants and pollution and reduces inflammation of the respiratory tract.

This type of treatment has been used for many years in Europe, where people would travel to underground salt caves. So not only is this room extremely relaxing, it is good for you. We loved reclining back in our chairs, putting our feet up, and breathing it all in. And by this point we were both so relaxed, that we soon fell sound asleep!
