As some of you may know, we love our Georgia State Parks GeoTour. It has given us purpose to get outside and explore our beautiful state parks. Growing up near Pine Mountain, GA my friends and I loved to venture into FDR State Park for exploring the mountain views alongside the miles of hiking trails. Since the recent Going Caching 2013 Mega Event, which was held at FDR State Park, this park has become one of the top Geocaching State Parks in the country! So geocaching FDR State Park is like no other state park that you have gone geocaching in before.
Geocaching Events Bring Fun & Visitors to the State Parks
Hosting Geocaching Events in local state parks has it’s advantages, like placing hundreds of caches within the grounds of the state park for attendees to go in search of. In fact, the local geocaching community, Georgia Geocaching Association, made such a great impression with the FDR State Park officials, that they have allowed the hundreds of caches placed here for the event to remain in their place for future geocachers to enjoy! It is refreshing to hear that state park officials take pride in having so many caches hidden within the park for all to come and experience.
Geocaching While Learning About History
FDR State Park is a very historic state park for our country, but there is an even more historic place just down the road in Warm Springs, GA. Franklin D. Roosevelt will always be to some, the best U.S. President we have ever had. He fought World War II from his home, otherwise known as The Little White House, just a few miles from the state park that holds his name. You can also find that this Historic Site is also home of a geocache placed in part of the Georgia State Parks and Historic Site GeoTour.
FDR hosted world leaders within the grounds of what is now the State Park. There is so much history in this area is and the caches placed here give an opportunity for you to experience and learn about this historic place. The scenery surrounding FDR State Park is breathtaking, and one of my favorite areas in my home state of Georgia.
Activities Offered in FDR State Park
FDR State Park is full of so many geocaches that it will take you several days to find all of them. This is a great weekend adventure for the entire family. You can camp or enjoy one of the quaint cabins, most of which look over the peaceful lake.
You can rent a canoe to explore and relax on the lake, or you can use it to hope over to Sock-Monkey Island to discover the most favored cache on the grounds! Well worth the possibility of tipping your canoe, which we had to learn the hard way while getting to the island. Really cool cache though, and luckily our GPS is waterproof!
Miles and Miles of Hiking Trials
While speaking with Desmond, the Park Ranger, at the recent Going Caching 2013 Mega Event, we could tell that he was thrilled and proud the have geocaches placed within his park. With hundreds of miles of hiking trails for all levels of hikers, this is the perfect place for the Adventure Cacher. We love packing up our Adventure Bag, and hitting the trails in search of exercise and geocaches.
Overall Geocaching Experience at FDR State Park
FDR State Park is full of geocaches and will continue to host geocachers from around the world. There are so many fun and creatives caches hidden along the trails, that you will surely not be without a cache to discover. This easily has become one of our favorite state parks in the Georgia State Parks & Historic Sites GeoTour. FDR State Park will always hold a special place in our hearts. We love the fact that our Georgia State Parks are so Geocaching Friendly.
